Netplay improvements are coming to emulation frontend RetroArch

One of the coolest things about RetroArch is its simple implementation of netplay across a variety of emulators - at least, in theory. When it works, it's great, but it can be pretty fiddly to get to that point. Luckily, the devs have put out an array of fixes and improvements in its latest update, and there are more on the way.

"Netplay has received plenty of improvements thanks to the efforts of Cthulhu," the devs explain in the 1.9.14 update notes. "We have a lot more prepared for the next version, so consider this a prelude to the main event." The current round of improvements include a variety of quality of life improvements and stability fixes, but "for the next version, we will finally address the relay MITM server issues".

RetroArch's MITM (man in the middle) server is intended to make connecting to other players more convenient, as it routes netplay traffic through a central relay. That prevents you from having to set up port forwarding or a VPN to connect with friends, but even the relay server has proven a bit fiddly in the past, so it's good to see improvements on the way.

The Sims 4's first free SDX content drop arrives today, with more to come

Back in October, Maxis detailed the Sims Delivery Express, or SDX, for The Sims 4. Basically, these will be tiny updates delivered for free, in-game. They're smaller than proper game updates, they can be distributed more regularly, and they'll bring new create-a-Sim options, new build mode items, or small game fixes. The first one is now live.

When you next boot The Sims 4, you'll see an in-game notification telling you that the first SDX drop is live. Once it's downloaded - which will be basically instantaneous in this case - you'll be prompted to restart the game to see the new content. You can choose how often the game looks for new SDX drops, or whether it downloads them automatically, from the options menu.

The first drop, which should be available now, is a new hairstyle. You can see what it looks like above, and that's pretty much all the help you're going to get finding it in create-a-Sim - there doesn't appear to be any clear highlight of the new addition in-game.

Call of Duty: Warzone Season 1 release time – Here's when Caldera opens up

A new Season One of Call of Duty: Warzone is about to begin, and this time it's a big one. The bleak industrial foothills of Verdansk are making way for the vibrant volcanic island of Caldera, a WW2-themed battle royale game map to match this year's Call of Duty: Vanguard. Here's when you'll be able to play on Caldera.

First off, you'll want to know when you can pre-load the update. That begins tonight, December 7, at 9pm PT, which translates to December 8 12am ET / 5am GMT. This is also when Warzone servers will go offline to start the changeover to the new Season 1 and Caldera map.

December 8, players who own Call of Duty: Vanguard will be able to start playing Warzone on Caldera at 9am PT / 12pm ET / 5pm GMT. These players will have exclusive access to the map for 24 hours, although everyone else will still be able to play on the Rebirth Island map for some 'mini' battle royale action.

     Minecraft 1.18.1 saves the bees

If you've been keeping bees in Minecraft, you might've noticed that some of the bumbly insects weren't where you left them. It seems that bees have had a habit of disappearing into the digital abyss for some time, but now, at last, a fix is on the way. Minecraft update 1.18.1 will prevent bees from despawning.

According to the bug (ha) tracker, bees inside of hives or nests would sometimes despawn when the world was reloaded. In 1.18.1 release candidate 1, that's been fixed - the improvement should be in the live game soon. Players have been reporting the issue since back in 1.17, and while this won't bring your bees back from the abyss, at least it'll prevent any future casualties.

Minecraft 1.18.1 also revises fog generation, so you'll have better visibility across those vast landscapes. Beyond that, well… It's a pretty minor update, largely focused on stability improvements. 1.18 itself was certainly large enough to justify some time for smaller bug fixes in its aftermath, after all.

Doom II mod Ashes 2063 is now a standalone free game

One of the more ambitious modding projects for Doom II has become its own standalone free game. Ashes: Afterglow now includes two full episodes of post-apocalyptic, Mad Max action, and it's available for downloading if you've ever wanted to drive around through the ruins of Atlanta on a motorcycle with machine guns on it.

Ashes: Afterglow is one of the most convincing throwbacks to '80s B-tier action movies I've ever seen, and it began life as a total conversion mod for Doom II, although it's grown a lot over the course of the past six years. Lead modder Vostyok says it's inspired by Doom's action, the big open Build Engine levels of Duke Nukem 3D, and the vibes of the Stalker series, and you can see that all on display in the trailer below.

You'll have to scavenge and fight your way through the ruins of an America devastated by a cataclysmic nuclear explosion in Atlanta, locking horns with raiders, mutants, vicious animals, and supernatural enemies borne out of the ambient radiation left in the wake of the disaster.

Halo's Grunt birthday party is now a weapon mod in Destiny 2

Destiny 2's latest update celebrates the 30th anniversary of developer Bungie, which - younger readers should brace themselves here - was once known best as the studio behind Halo. Serendipitously timed ahead of the Halo Infinite release date, the update is chock-full of Halo-themed easter eggs - including one perfect for a birthday party.

In Destiny 2, you will now be able to find a weapon mod called Sweaty Confetti, which "causes a festive celebration on each precision final blow". In other words, headshots cause enemies to explode in bursts of colourful confetti. This is a pretty clear reference to the Grunt birthday party skull from classic Halo, which provides similar effects on the Master Chief's enemies.

This isn't the first time Bungie has made this specific Halo callback, either. Back in Forsaken, the Last Wish raid had an easter egg which allowed you to replicate the celebratory headshot effect for the duration of that particular content. It's great to see Bungie continuing to have fun with its lineage of FPS games like this.

Red Dead Online gets festive content starting from next week

December is here and full of cheer, so your favourite PC games are getting a winter makeover. Red Dead Online is no different, with Rockstar Games revealing in a blog post that the cowboy game is getting four weeks of bonuses on Moonshiner and Trader Sales, bounty hunting, call to arms, gun rush, and more.

Starting next week, Rockstar says you can expect "flurries in the forecast and celebrations to be in full swing with decorations at your campsite and moonshine shack, as well as on the cobbled streets of Saint Denis". Basically, expect a blanket of fluffy snow and some fairy lights on buildings. Oh, and you're getting carols, music, and season's greetings from Cripps, Harriet, and Gus on your travels, too.

Red Dead Online is also getting seasonal Call to Arms maps, though you'll have to wait until December 21 for that. Check your local inbox when the time comes for telegrams describing "heartless bandits laying siege to the holdouts at Colter, Rhodes, Hanging Dog Ranch, and Emerald Ranch under the cover of inclement weather". It also looks like a festive train will be stopping in the Rhodes and Emerald Ranch amidst the fighting, though it'll just have more dudes with guns - no presents here.

Free games: Historical city builder Anno 1404 is free-to-keep

City-building games continue to be prolific well past the heyday of SimCity, as the continued success of games like Anno 1800 can attest. Now, Ubisoft is giving you an excuse to dive into the historical series' back catalogue, as Anno 1404 is now free-to-keep for a limited time.

You can grab Anno 1404 History Edition via Ubisoft from now until December 14 at 6am PST / 9am EST / 2pm GMT. Once it's claimed, it'll be in your Ubisoft Connect library forever, just as with any digital game you might purchase. (You can pick up Anno 1404 at a 50% discount right now on Steam, but that version still activates through the Ubisoft client.)

The History Edition of Anno 1404 was released in 2020 as part of the Anno History Collection, which gently updated the original games to run on modern PCs at current resolutions. Anno 1404 History Edition includes both the base game and the Venice expansion, which adds multiplayer options as well as a host of additional content.

I fell mushy, gooey, sweaty in love with Thirty Flights Of Loving from the first time I played it. It's a rapid-fire, magical realistic heist game, which tells its short story using smash cuts, flashbacks, and no dialogue.

It is now nine years old, and so of course it's received a 9th anniversary update. It has been "updated for modern operating systems", with menu, HUD and UI fixes, and Mac and Linux ports. Lovely.

Halo Tv Series Teaser The Game AwardsThe Halo TV series is on its way, and today we got two teasers on the upcoming Paramount production. First, Paramount offered a short bit of footage, showing off some very Halo-esque scenes. The second tease was that we won't see the rest of the Halo TV series trailer until Thursday during The Game Awards. The video itself is short, only offering five seconds of actual content. But there are some interesting bits to check out. The Halo TV series will star the Master Chief, but he won't be the only Spartan around. And that's a good change. Though the Chief often makes huge waves when he's out solo, he's even deadlier when paired up with a squad of other Spartans. The show will see him alongside a few of fellow Spartan-IIs such as Vannack-134 and Kai-125. A whole host of rumors have alleged several aspects about the game, such as its title and potential open-world structure. But Sega has not officially confirmed any of them. At the very least, it seems likely that the new game will go by the name Sonic Frontiers, at least judging by a recent trademark that Sega filed. We may finally receive more concrete information soon, though, as Geoff Keighley and Sega have both hinted at a potential Sonic announcement at The Game Awards this coming Thursday. Keighley began this new round of speculation on Twitter yesterday when a user asked him if he considers himself a Sonic fan.
