Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, June 12, 2023 7:00 PM There is one good dog in video games and his name is Missile the Pomeranian. Fight me. On second thought, maybe don't fight me. My wrists are quite dainty truth be told, and I'd almost certainly end up pegging it in an actual fist fight. If that happened, I might turn into a ghost that's forever doomed to manipulate objects within arm's reach that may or may not change the course of people's history. Actually, maybe you should fight me on this, because a) that sounds pretty rad actually, and b) I've been playing an early version of the freshly announced Steam demo for the excellent Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective this week, and it's reminded me all over again just how good it is to muck about your environment as a disemodied spirit. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, June 12, 2023 4:51 PM It's no secret that last-gen graphics cards are getting huge discounts at the moment, as pent-up demand has been sated and next-generation models are starting to be released from both Nvidia and AMD's lineups. We've covered more mid-range models before, but today we have something a bit different: a truly mainstream graphics card that delivers excellent 1080p performance at less than £200, plus nice extras like ray-tracing hardware, FSR 2 image upscaling and a modern media encoder for streaming and recording gameplay. I'm talking about the AMD Radeon RX 6600, which is available in the popular Sapphire Pulse configuration for £180 plus £8 shipping over at Overclockers UK - with a free copy of the Resident Evil 4 remake. This is a great price for a card that makes a brilliant upgrade from something like a GTX 1060, RX 570 or RX 580, providing significantly better rasterised performance (up to 2x as fast) while also providing those features that weren't available a few generations ago. Nice! |

Siliconera Monday, June 12, 2023 7:01 PM All detectives dream of solving a murder, but how many of them get the chance to solve their own? That is the question that faces Sissel, the amnesiac protagonist of Capcom's Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective remaster. Despite over a decade having passed between the game's original release and now, it still feels holds up with its fast-paced writing, timeless aesthetic, and smooth visuals in the preview build. The story of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective follows Sissel, who wakes up to find himself dead. However, he doesn't remember how he died, nor does he even remember who he was. Thankfully, he is a special spirit capable of Ghost Tricks. With them, he can interact with the world of the living by traveling through objects or manipulating them. He can also briefly go back in time. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective presents an intriguing premise with a unique style of gameplay that is very intuitive to pick up. [caption id="attachment_967663" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Image via Capcom[/caption] Before we begin, let me start by saying that I never played the original Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. The extent of my knowledge is that Shu Takumi wrote it and it was on the Nintendo DS. That second part is the key point. How can Capcom remaster a game native to the DS in this day and age? To answer this question, I did some detective work and... peeked at screenshots of the original Ghost Trick. I learned that, unlike games such as The World Ends With You, it had never been a game that entirely relied on the split-screen concept of the DS. So the port feels very natural. I don't feel like I'm losing out on anything by playing it with one screen during this initial segment. Of course, since the game is also available on mobile devices, it's not surprising that it's fully playable with a single screen. As you can expect from the name and synopsis, Ghost Trick is a mystery and puzzle game. Unlike Shu Takumi's Ace Attorney, some of the puzzles have time limits. There are also more arbitrary time limits, such as needing to manipulate an object before a character performs an action. Since you're using tools in your environment to accomplish a variety of tasks, it feels very dynamic in how you go about solving the puzzles. Sometimes, Sissel can't reach an object, which requires you to jump into something else. Sometimes, an object isn't present for Sissel to interact with, so you have to find a way to bring it back on screen. It doesn't feel like playing Ace Attorney at all, but I can still definitely see 4's influences in the main mechanics. [caption id="attachment_967665" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Capcom[/caption] Personally, what stands out to Ghost Trick for me is in the humor. It's definitely a Shu Takumi game, as if the sound effects every few text boxes don't already clue you in. On paper, the story sounds quite serious. But the assassins and their little quirks are genuinely funny, and Missile is absolutely adorable. My one complaint is that I wish we could fast forward through scenes, but my impatience is probably a side effect of this fast-paced information age we live in now. Thanks to the original art direction of the game, it's hard to think of it as a game from 2010. How smooth the port looks and plays also lends to that impression. I'm very excited to learn about Sissel's past and future when the full game comes out! Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective will come out for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One on June 30, 2023. Windows PC version previewed. The long-awaited dystopian sci-fi game is currently in development, and it will appear for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC. The world quickly shifts, and the characters are then seen trying to avoid a falling satellite, after which they appear on the surface of the Earth's moon. Siliconera Monday, June 12, 2023 5:30 PM A new trailer for tactics RPG Demonschool appeared, mixing gameplay snippets with glimpses of practical-effect monsters to showcase the game's Italian horror film influence. We also got another look at the games plan-then-execute combat and a peek at some more party members. [Thanks, IGN!] Developed by Necrosoft (Hyper Gunsport, Oh, Deer!) and published by Ysbryd Games, Demonschool's turn based combat places an emphasis on movement and positioning. When not fighting for their lives against demons, players must plan their characters' schedules around the school day in order to develop their stats, abilities, and relationships. The practical effects used in the trailer do not appear to be used in-game, but several encounters seem to blend 2D and 3D graphical styles to contrast the natural and supernatural elements of the world. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ay4WU2j2Xio[/embed] Necrosoft stated that another big inspiration for Demonschool was the Persona series, which also contains supernatural elements and high-school relationship building. Persona 5 Tactica, the series' own foray into turn-based tactics, leaked early on an Atlus Instagram account but has since been formally announced and detailed. Demonschool currently does not have a release date as of this trailer, but is slated for a 2023 release on the Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
