The result is a game with satisfying battles that make you feel really smart for solving its combat puzzles, but one that ultimately feels a little too repetitive as you progress through its campaign. It's an atmospheric and rewardingly meticulous experience that typically pits you against overwhelming numbers, where victory comes about by carefully exploiting reaction abilities, positioning your troop of weary warriors just-so, and manipulating the initiative bar. At times, for me, it's up there with Into The Breach. But I do acknowledge that it's an acquired taste, not least because the narrative and extra-dimensional setting are relentlessly unpleasant - a terrible soup of mother metaphors and Penny Dreadful imagery, in which you pit clones against Silent Hill monsters, then liquefy the survivors to spawn new characters. What's the appropriate way to follow up a game like that? Ah yes, with an episodic dating sim. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, December 13, 2023 12:00 PM  Back in May when I first played Ubisoft's new Metroid-like Prince Of Persia game, The Lost Crown, ahead of its reveal at this year's Summer Game Fest, I got to sample several hours' worth of some of the early areas inside its cursed mountaintop citadel of Mount Qaf. Some of protagonist Sargon's powers had been unlocked early to give us a taste of his abilities, and on the whole, I had an exceedingly good time with it. One thing was missing though, and that was any kind of narrative framing for why Sargon was here in the first place. Sure, we'd been told ahead of time that Sargon's main mission in The Lost Crown is tracking down and saving the eponymous Prince of this game, but I didn't actually see any of this in action. Anything with the slightest whiff of story about it had been expertly excised from that initial demo build, and I was left none the wiser about how those opening hours of The Lost Crown would really play out in the final game. Now, I've been able to play the game from the beginning, with all the story bits slotted back in and Sargon's powers unlocked in the correct order. You may have got a glimpse of some of that stuff in the new trailer released during last week's Game Awards. In the space of two minutes, it sets the scene for Sargon's rescue mission by first introducing all of his fellow warrior mates, and then seconds later showing how they're all at each other's throats as they get increasingly turned around in Mount Qaf's labyrinth. And oh my, I can practically feel all the inevitable backstabbing from here. It's going to be delicious, I can tell, and I can't wait to slice them all six ways to Sunday when The Lost Crown comes out in January. |

Where blocking - aka holding a button to avoid damage - is a concession to the tedious attritional undertow of many action games, parrying - aka pressing a button on cue to cancel damage and often, prep a counter - is the act of cutting through the bullshit. It passively reduces any and all visual and thematic overwhelm the game would have you experience to a question of timing. In the face of a good parry mechanic, the grandest of bosses are equivalent to rank-and-file mobs. You're a monster the size of a building? You're the demonic manifestation of a protagonist's mother issues? You're capitalism incarnate? You're wielding eight chainsaws at once? Ehhh. I'm not just going to survive your onslaught. I'm going to dismiss it. All of it: your absurd DPS, your multiple elemental modifiers, your screen-blanketing special effects, your overcooked core concept, the very laws of physics - poof, gone, as though they had never been. Blocking is akin to maintaining a poker face while you're being harangued by your boss over Zoom. Parrying is politely pointing out that your boss has left his camera on, and that he should probably wear trousers when he's at work. It is "nope" said so quietly that it shuts everything else up. |

Larian Studios have launched "A Very Baldur's Gate Christmas," a 12 day series of simple puzzles containing snippets of a Baldur's Gate 3 Christmas story. The first puzzle and story piece are available today, with the others becoming available day-by-day until December 24, 2023.
The puzzles are a simple card-matching memory game, which upon completion will let you read the day's story snippet. The Baldur's Gate 3 story snippet for December 13, 2023 concerned the Gremishka, a malevolent and folkloric creature that despises the holiday. As the other days unlock, a narrative will play out, which is promised to contain "a Larian twist." Tabletop gaming-themed prizes are also promised, however details about them do not seem to be available through the site.
Larian also recently made Baldur's Gate 3 available for Xbox, with the game appearing on the marketplace during 2023's The Game Awards after being previously teased. The developer also released some statistics from the game, including the reveal that Shadowheart was the most popular romance option.
The "A Very Baldur's Gate Christmas" website, along with the first puzzle and story piece, are available now with more becoming available each day until December 24, 2023. Meanwhile, Baldur's Gate 3 is immediately available on PC, PS5 and now Xbox Series X.

The Moonstone Island winter update is now out, bringing new decorations, some quality-of-life changes and a collection of new spirits. To celebrate this major update, the game is also receiving a 20% discount until December 20, 2023.
Studio Supersoft had previously announced the free contents of the winter update, which includes a collection of seasonal decorations. These include a gingerbread house, presents and snowflake garlands. More decorations will be available in a paid DLC. In addition, players will have access to a bigger Spirit Barn and will be able to store up to 300 Spirits at the Science Center. There will also be a Warp Totem which will add fast travel to the game. A new infinite dungeon and new spirits have also been added, but the details of these are being left for players to discover for themselves.
A few issues have also been patched as part of the update. This includes a bug that prevented progress in the Earth Temple if players used fertilizer instead of the Alchemist's Wand, an exploit allowing players to reap double crops by pressing two buttons at once and the mysterious appearance of Dark Matter in chests.
To celebrate the release of the winter update, Studio Supersoft has announced there will be a discount on Moonstone Island for a week. From now until December 20, 2023, there will be 20% off. In addition, the paid winter DLC will receive a 15% discount for this week, which will normally be sold for $3.99.
Moonstone Island is out now for PC, with a Switch version on the way. The winter update is out now.

The release date for the new Black Butler: Public School anime adaptation is pinned down to April 2024. However, there's no exact date or time for when it will begin airing on the official Japanese website.
The announcement included a number of stations that will be showing the anime. For example, MBS, TOKYO MX, and Tochigi TV were among those named. Outside Japan, we know that Crunchyroll picked up the show. Back at Anime Expo 2023, it confirmed that it would show the CloverWorks show in 2024 when it begins airing. At the time, a first trailer also appeared.
In case you missed it, here's that teaser. It mainly focused on confirming who would be involved in this new adaptation of the series while showing footage of Ciel and Sebastian Michaelis. It also confirmed that Daisuke Ono would play Sebastian and Maaya Sakamoto would be Ciel. Both are reprising their roles from past arcs and adaptations.
Part of this latest announcement involved a new key visual and the release of two wallpapers. The key visual shows Ciel as he'll look in the new episodes. Meanwhile, the two wallpapers feature both Ciel and Sebastian's key images with the series logo and a note that it will air in April 2024.
The original Black Butler anime aired back in 2008. It was followed by a Book of Circus series and Book of Murder two-episode OVA.
The Black Butler: Public School release date will fall in April 2024. The manga is handled by Yen Press. Past arcs of the anime are streaming on Crunchyroll.

The final episode of the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet anime series Paldean Winds, titled "Breathe Together", is now live and viewable on the Official Pokemon Youtube Channel. The series was produced by Wit Studio and was first announced back in August, 2023, with the first episode appearing in September and the second in October.
This episode begins with a segment showing off the Paldean countryside and other scenes set to accompanying music, before transitioning to a performance by Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Ghost-type gym leader Ryme. After that comes a segment when Electric-type leader Iono streams her attempt to name all Paldean gym leaders within a minute, before another musical section. Finally, the anime closes with a scene of the characters Aliquis, Ohara, and Hohma reacting to the success of the video they produced through the series.
"Breathe Together" is the fourth and final episode of the series, coming after "Breathe Out," "Breathe In," and "Take a Breath." The episodes follow the story of three students at Naranja Academy: Aliquis, Ohara, and Hohma. They are tasked with creating a video showcasing the school they attend. Studio Wit, who produced the animation, also created the previous Pokemon miniseries Hisuian Snow.

The Pokemon Company also recently released a trailer for the upcoming Scarlet and Violet DLC pack, titled The Indigo Disk. The DLC is set to become available on December 14, 2023. The company also announced a collaboration with Japanese amusement park Yomiuriland to produce a Pokemon themed zone called Pokepark Kanto.
The final episode of the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet anime series Paldean Winds is available to watch on the Official Pokemon Youtube channel, as are the other episodes of the series. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now for Nintendo Switch.

Bethesda updated the status of the Fallout 4 PS5 and Xbox Series X next-gen update over a year after it was announced. It is now coming in 2024.
Here's Bethesda's official statement, which ended up shared on social media on December 13, 2023. This next-gen update was supposed to debut before 2023 ended, according to the October 24, 2022 reveal. The announcement didn't explain what might have caused the delay. It only cited the developer as needing more time to complete the update.
Prior to this reveal, one of the last times it came up was when former Bethesda Head of Publishing Pete Hines responded on social media on it prior to his retirement. When someone asked for an update, he mentioned Starfield was the priority and said, "When we have an update, we will share it."
What do we know about the Fallout 4 PS5 and Xbox Series X next-gen update so far?
Bethesda's been a bit tight-lipped about what the new version of the game will entail. Back in October 2022, it did note some cursory elements. A Performance Mode will show up as an option, which will offer a guaranteed, higher frame rate than the current version of the game.
There will be more to the Creation Club. These were the items people could create, play, and sell in-game. It wasn't in Fallout 4 at launch, but did show up in the 1.10 update.
As a reminder, Fallout 4 launched on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC back in November 2015. It is now over eight years old. Following its launch, a Game of the Year edition with all of its add-ons also appeared.
Fallout 4 is on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and the PS5 and Xbox Series X next-gen update won't appear for it until 2024.

Bandai Namco and Apple announced that a new Tamagotchi game starring Mametchi called Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom will launch on January 4, 2024. Apple Arcade subscribers will be able to access the game.
The product page for the title is already live. In this game, the familiar Tamagotchi mascot Mametchi, who players of the pet sim usually get by taking exceptional care of their character, takes part in what seems to be a simulation with RPG elements. Players will take on quests, work with other characters, collect materials, craft, and restore a community. The first trailer shows some of the different biomes, shows how characters can be dressed up, shows activities like mining, fishing, and chopping trees, and shows how someone can decorate rooms. Both Memetchi and Kuchipatchi are shown alongside Mametchi.

This means yet another game with life sim, crafting, and creation elements is coming to Apple Arcade. The service already offers titles like Hello Kitty Island Adventure and Stardew Valley for subscribers.
It also comes after one of the most recent worldwide Tamagotchi releases. The Tamagotchi Uni appeared in 2023. It is a successor to the Tamagotchi Smart, is worn on the wrist like a smartwatch, and can connect to the internet without the help of other devices.
The new Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom Apple Arcade game will debut on January 4, 2023 for Apple mobile devices and Macs.

In 2023, the Fire Emblem Heroes Christmas banner stars multiple Three Houses characters and includes an Engage Yunaka cameo. People can get Byleth with Byleth as a Duo unit, as well as Dimitri or Edelgard, starting on December 14, 2023.
Dimitri, Edelgard, and the Byleth Duo unit are all five-star characters. Dimitri is a cavalry character with the Blue Yule Axe. Edelgard is an armored unit with the Black Yule Lance. The Byleth pair features the male and female versions of the avatars as armored units who wield the Holy Yule Blade sword.
Yunaka is the lone Fire Emblem Engage character, and the five-star cavalry character's kit is based on her role as a thief. She uses a colorless ranged Silent Yule Knife to attack. She's also the first character in the game with the Assassin's Strike B skill that deals seven damage to her enemy when she starts a battle, deals damage based on her opponent's defense, and debuffs their defense and speed.
There's also one other character who shows up in the new trailer, but isn't a part of the Fire Emblem Heroes Christmas banner for 2023. Claude will be able to earn at the four and five-star levels via the next Tempest Trial+.

If someone owns the PC version of Skullgirls 2nd Encore and the DLC on Steam, they now have early access to Marie. Hidden Variable Studios launched the Skullgirl ahead of her 2024 debut.
If someone wants to start using Marie, it is fairly easy. They need a copy of the game and either the $9.99 Marie DLC or the $34.99 Season 1 Pass. You then need to select the latest beta when launching the game. This can be done in-game in options or before you even launch it by choosing "Skullgirls Beta" from the launcher. Note that since she's still early on, it doesn't have everything yet.
As for what to expect from Marie at this point, she isn't fully balanced or complete yet. This means her moves and the damage they do might not be completely set yet. Her story, stage, and full alternate color selections won't be around until she launches in Q1 2024. 2024 also is when she and the other Season Pass 1 DLC characters will get voice acting in their story mode tales. However, Hidden Variable did share the following completed alternate colors.
Here's the latest trailer showing off the Steam early access version of Marie in the PC version of Skullgirls 2nd Encore.
It took about two months from Marie to go from her alpha state to early access.
As a reminder, the Skullgirls 2nd Encore Season 1 Pass gives people this new character, as well as Annie of the Stars, Black Dahlia, and Umbrella. People can also find all of these characters in the mobile version of the game. It is unknown if we could see more characters and who they might be. However, people who appeared in the "Keep Skullgirls Growing" Indiegogo campaign could end up being ones we eventually get to see in the game if more DLC appears.
Skullgirls 2nd Encore is available on the PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC via Steam. The Marie early access build is available on PC via Steam now ahead of her Q1 2024 launch. Skullgirls Mobile is also available on Android and Apple iOS devices.

The latest Tekken 8 character trailer focuses on Yoshimitsu, a series staple who's been around since the first game. This video focuses on his look and moveset this time around.
The video begins with his normal introduction, as well as a look at an otherworldly stage tied to him. We get to see many of his attacks against past characters revealed, like Nina. Yoshimitsu also mentions getting revenge, with the blade "thirsting" for his opponent's life and "avenging followers." We get to see an example of the character's ninjitsu and sword-based attacks throughout, with the video ending with a special finisher.
Here's the full look at Yoshimitsu.
As a reminder, Yoshimitsu isn't just a staple in the Tekken series. He's also appeared in Soulcalibur games. He's been in each of those entries, with his last appearance in Soulcalibur VI.

The latest KDColle (Kadokawa Collection) Oshi no Ko figure will feature Ai, Ruby, and Aqua Hoshino. This means all three characters in the family will be represented in one statue. The first 3D prototype ended up just being revealed on the official KDColle social media account.
This new Oshi no Ko figure features Ai's children, Ruby and Aqua, in their younger forms. In the figure, Ruby is shown happily hugging Ai, while Aqua is engrossed reading a book in his mother's lap. Overall, this figure recreates a touching scene for the Hoshino family.
Currently, this 3D prototype features no coloring besides the Hoshino family's sparkling eyes. Fans of Oshi no Ko will recognize the significance of their starry eyes. They will apparently be recreated faithfully in this figure as well. We can expect to see a fully painted prototype released in the future as development continues.

A price point for this figure has yet to be determined, but KDColle mentioned that more information will be released in the future.
Oshi no Ko can be streamed on HIDIVE. MangaPlus distributes the English version of the manga, while Yen Press handles physical volumes. Season 2 is on the way.

Cospa announced that new Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon merchandise will appear at Comiket 103. The new goods are based on Arcueid, Ciel, and Neco-Arc, and the lineup includes T-shirts, acrylic stands, tote bags, and stickers. [Thanks, PR Times!]
The new Tsukihime items will also be available for pre-order from the Cospa online store. Pre-orders end on January 14, 2024. The Cospa website includes older Tsukihime merchandise and items. The Comiket 1033 items are marked with a "new" tag. All T-shirt items are available in S, M, L, and XL sizes.
