What’s in a name? A lot, if you believe the latest rumors around WWDC 2025 – because Apple is apparently planning to shake up its operating systems by rebranding them all. Don’t worry, we’re not about to see iOS replaced with some ridiculous name dreamed up by consultants, but we could see Apple introduce a unified numbering system, with iOS 19, watchOS 12, visionOS 2 and all of its other platforms instead labelled as ‘26’.
This makes sense from a pure consistency point of view, but it also points the way towards far bigger and more interesting changes. Apple last made a naming shift of this magnitude with the iPhone X, and that device was a very different beast from the preceding iPhone 8. We’ve already heard talk of Apple giving its software platforms a visual revamp at WWDC, and the naming rumors add weight to the idea that these revamps will be significant.
Google and Samsung are not standing still either, and below you can read about OS changes to both Android 16 and One UI 8. With hardware improvements in short supply these days – how much better can most phones get? – it’s on the software front that many battles are being fought.
Of course, it wouldn’t be another week in 2025 without big AI stories too, and we’ve got a couple of those below. My favorite concerns Editor at Large Lance Ulanoff’s experiments with Google’s Veo 3 video platform; image- and video-generation technology has come so far in a couple of years that it’s almost surreal.
AI isn’t yet dominating the streaming landscape (it’s only a matter of time, I’m sure), so be sure to also check out our selections of the best new movies and shows to watch this weekend.
